In AD150, Geographer Ptolemy wrote of a snow capped, mountain range, deep in the heart of Africa that, he claimed, was the source of the Nile and which he called the “Mountains of the moon” in 1889, Henry Stanley emerged from central Africa and confirmed that such a mountain existed, and mapped it by a local name “Rwenjura” meaning, the rain maker. Rwenzori National Park, although rarely seen is known for her elephants, buffalos, giant forest hogs, bushbucks, leopards and chimpanzee. However other types of primates including black and white colobus monkeys and blue moneys can be seen widely. Rwenzori is a birds paradise, with 241 birds species recorded including the Rwenzori turaco and malachite sunbird among others, of which 19 are endemic to the Rwenzori mountain. Known as a climber’s paradise, Rwenzori mountain highest peak is at 5109 meters above sea level, which takes seven days hikking to and from the peak, going through the most amazing vegetation zones and plants that persist high altitude.
